Facts About THE SANTA CLAUSE
Released in the United States on November 11, 1994, THE SANTA CLAUSE would eventually gross $190 million worldwide and spawn two sequels. According to Box Office Mojo, it was the fourth biggest money maker of 1994.
THE SANTA CLAUSE was the first opportunity TV favorite Tim Allen had to lead a motion picture, but he was not attached to the project from the start. Bill Murray was originally considered for the lead, but it’s reported that Murray turned down the role because he had a bad experience making another Christmas movie, SCROOGED, a few years earlier.
Speaking of bad experiences, Allen allegedly had a less than fun time making the movie. It was filmed during the summer, and he spent a good amount of time covered in latex and prosthetics and fat suits. He reported spent 4-5 hours in the make-up chair each day before shooting commenced.
The film is directed by John Pasquin, who is the real-life spouse of actress JoBeth Williams, who is probably best known for her 1980s hit films POLTERGEIST and THE BIG CHILL.
Pasquin would again direct Tim Allen three years later in the comedy JUNGLE 2 JUNGLE, which incidentally also featured JoBeth Williams. He also directed the sequel MISS CONGENIALITY 2 in 2005 with Sandra Bullock.
