With the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s often easy to neglect ways to keep the importance of Christ at the forefront of our celebration. Using these trivia questions will be an easy way of not only exemplifying the true reason for Christmas but also preparing your children for church, Sunday school, and other areas of Christian education.

Seemingly small activities such as this not only equip your children for the present but also prepare them for the future when they have families of their own. Hopefully, the religious knowledge they obtain now will serve them and their families well for generations to come.

The Joy of Christmas Bible Trivia

Some of my fondest church-related memories as a youngster were playing Bible trivia during the Sunday school hour. I remember the box well—white with gold trim and the faintest of rainbows over the name. I even remember the tagline, “The game where trivia is not trivial.”

If I close my eyes now, I can hear the unmistakable sound of the box top being lifted off as the Sunday school teacher would place us into teams. I never really stopped to think about it, but my present-day love of trivia probably started on those Sunday mornings at St. John’s.

There are numerous ways to incorporate Bible trivia into both educational and entertainment environments:

  • Have a spelling bee using trivia questions rather than words to spell.
  • Have fun trivia contests with small gifts as rewards.
  • As mentioned above, use trivia interspersed with Sunday school lessons to encourage participation.
  • Teachers, provide parents with the trivia questions you are using so they can work with their children at home.
  • Have scavenger hunts in which the correct answers lead to new destinations.
  • Invite your children to be creative and come up with their own questions THEY can ask YOU.

Here are a few things to remember when preparing a trivia game:

  • Be sure to prepare questions that are at an appropriate level of difficulty for your children.
  • Use multiple choice options for more challenging questions.
  • Keep it fun – encourage those who answer correctly but also support those who aren’t sure of the answers.
  • Ask open-ended questions in between trivia questions to encourage discussion. (e.g. How do you think Mary and Joseph felt? How do you think the Wise Men felt when they found baby Jesus?)
