This paper mache star isn’t that hard to make. If you love putting different kinds of ornaments on your Christmas tree, this is perfect for you. And because you’ve made it yourself, it’s more special.
WHAT IS PAPER MACHE?
Paper mache is a crafting technique that a lot of people use. It is simply making use of paper and paste. With this technique, they are able to create any three-dimensional object they would want.
This crafting method was actually named after the French term for “chewed paper”. Since paper mache is a mixture of shredded paper and glue that hardens when dried up, the term chewed paper seems about right.
WHAT KIND OF PAPER WORKS BEST FOR PAPER MACHE ORNAMENTS?
To be honest, you can use any type of paper you have. Here is a list of ideas for you:
- Newspaper
This is the most common paper people use when making paper mache projects. One great thing about using old newspapers is that it is free and by using them, you get to recycle them too. So, if you happen to have a pile of newspapers lying around the house, now you can make good use of them.
- Tissue Paper or Paper Towel
Tissue paper is also great for making paper mache since it is soft. However, nowadays tissue paper is very valuable. But, if you have stocks of tissues, why not?
- Cotton Paper
This is a great paper for making paper mache but it is also expensive. With this paper, layers of your paper mache are harder, not like with other papers.
- Colored Paper
For something more with color, you can use colored paper which is also a good option. Plus, it’s cheaper than other papers like cotton paper.
WHAT KIND OF CRICUT DO I NEED FOR THIS CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT?
The machine used for this paper mache star project was the Cricut Maker. The Cricut Maker has 13 tools great for cutting, scoring, foiling, debossing, engraving, and a whole lot more. You can also use over 300 different materials with it. It is a pretty great investment if you love doing crafts!
Other Cricut machines should work as well or even a Silhouette machine!
HOW TO MAKE THIS PAPER MACHE STAR ORNAMENT WITHOUT A CRICUT MACHINE?
Using a Cricut machine will make things easier and faster. However, if you don’t have one and you want to make this ornament, you still can. A great alternative would be using a printer and sticker paper. But, the cut on the edges won’t be as clean as when you are using a Cricut machine.
If you do use the printer and sticker paper, you would have to do everything manually – cutting the letters and sticking them one by one to the star ornament.
Another alternative is to just use letter stickers! This is a cheap and fast method.
