WHAT IS DRESSING?
Dressing is a traditional side dish that is served at many Thanksgiving, Christmas and even Easter meals. It is typically made with a base of some kind of bread that has been torn up or cut into smaller pieces.
The dressing is usually baked in a casserole dish. There are lots of seasonings and herbs in dressing and it creates a wonderfully fragrant dish.
There are many, many ways to make dressing and it is fun to try new and different dressing recipes to find one your family loves!
STUFFING VERSUS DRESSING
Is there a difference between stuffing and dressing? A lot of people would say there is very little difference and I would agree.
The terms are almost interchangeable.
The main difference is that stuffing is usually “stuffed” inside another food…like the cavity of a turkey. The dressing is baked in the oven in a pan.
This easy cornbread dressing can be used inside a turkey or baked in the oven in a casserole pan.
CAN I MAKE DRESSING AHEAD OF TIME?
One great thing about dressing is that this easy side dish can be made up in advance.
You can actually make this up to 2 or 3 days in advance and it will still taste great on the big day.
Just follow the recipe up to the step where you bake the dressing. Instead of baking it, cover the pan tightly with foil and keep it in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake it.
When you are ready to bake it just follow the easy cornbread dressing recipe baking directions.
DRESSING INGREDIENT SUBSTITUTIONS
When you make stuffing or dressing you may need to make some substitutions due to taste preference or dietary issues.
For this recipe, it is easy to adjust the different vegetable amounts.
- If you only have green bell peppers, just use more green instead of red.
- Celery is a staple in most dressing recipes, but honestly, I don’t care for celery. I usually just add extra carrots and ditch the celery. I can always add a little celery salt for the flavor.
- If you don’t want to add onions you could add some diced apple instead for the texture. Onion powder can be added to bring a little onion flavor to the dish.
- Vegetable stock could be used in place of chicken stock.
