Days 1 to 5: Bible Verses about Hope and Prophecy
The first section of verses focuses on the Old Testament predictions of Jesus’ coming, and then on Day 5, Revelation predicts the things still to come. Just like the Old Testament people trusted God and waited for a Savior, we trust and know that someday God will make all things new.
Day 1. Isaiah 40:31 – Those who hope in the Lord will be given strength.
But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.
Day 2. Jeremiah 29:11 – The Lord’s plan is to give us hope and a future.
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Day 3. Isaiah 11:1-4 – A prophecy about the coming of The Lord.
There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
Day 4. Luke 1:67-80 – Zechariah’s Prophecy
And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,
“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he has visited and redeemed his people
and has raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David,
as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
that we should be saved from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us;
to show the mercy promised to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant,
the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us
that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
might serve him without fear,
in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.
And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
to give knowledge of salvation to his people
in the forgiveness of their sins,
because of the tender mercy of our God,
whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high
to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.”And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
Day 5. Revelation 21:5 – God’s promise to make all things new.

Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Day 23. John 3:16-17 – God gave His only Son so we can have eternal life.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Day 24. Luke 2:1-7 – The birth of Jesus.
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
Day 25. Luke 2:8-20 – The Shepherds visit Jesus.
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
Incorporating Verses into Daily Advent Practices When Counting Down to Christmas Day
It is challenging to stay steadfast in Christ Jesus when Christmas has become so much about material things like gifts, decorations, and party planning.
All those things are lovely if our heart is in the right place. The season is about Him first and foremost.
Here are a few ways I stay focused on the real meaning of Christmas during the Advent Season.
- Read a verse a day from the above list during morning devotions. When I prepare my heart each day, everything else falls into place. So, even if you are super busy, take this time with God, and you will be amazed at how everything else works out.
- During dinner prayers, have one of your kids read the verse, and then discuss what it means to each of you during the Christmas Season.
- Light an Advent wreath as a family or yourself for a time of quiet reflection.
- Take five minutes during a busy day to reflect on your morning Bible verse, or even just a couple minutes while sitting at a stop-light in your car, pausing between work meetings, or changing a load of laundry.
Preparing your heart and mind during Christmas will help you stay in the presence of the Holy Spirit instead of succumbing to the world’s expectations and busyness.
